Anthony Ammirati and Jules Bouyer aren’t too worried about those comments.
The French pole vaulter and diver shared their feelings about going viral at the 2024 Olympics after their respective manhood set the internet ablaze.
Anthony—whose crotch hit the crossbar after missing his target height—responded to Swedish track and field Olympian Armand Duplantis, who called him a viral sensation Aug. 4, by simply commenting four laughing emojis.
Although the 21-year-old—who landed in 15th place—was gutted by the defeat, fans reacted to the reason he didn’t medal. "He lost it," one user wrote in response to the post. "but tbh he won it." Another quipped, “Vive la baguette!”
Meanwhile, Jules—who finished fifth in the men's synchronized 3-metre springboard event Aug. 2—didn’t just make a splash with his dive. Photos and video of his manhood in a speedo after the competition went viral, with one user commenting, “Not gonna lie, I’m pulling for France now.”
And while he’d prefer fans focus on his performance and not his speedo, he’s not bothered by the remarks either. But he did emphasize how that’s not always the case for athletes.
"If some people find it amusing to look at my pants, that's their problem,” the 22-year-old told Reuters in an interview published Aug. 2. “It amused me. That said, we mustn't forget that it can take the athlete out of his bubble and that it can hurt.”
"That wasn't the case for me,” he added. “It was rather fun. I prefer people to look at my dives rather than my briefs, but there's nothing to worry about."
And the viral moment might be the beginning of some lucrative deals for the diver. Shinesty, a men’s intimates company known for its underwear that keeps everything in place, offered him a lifetime supply of its underwear and swim trunks, per TMZ.
“When we saw what Olympic diver Jules Bouyer was packing in his South of France, it didn’t matter that we were an American company,” a rep for the company told the outlet. “We wanted to give it a gold medal and protect that front truck of his for many Olympics to come.”
The company is also interested in collaborating with the Olympian on swimwear with a “reinforced crotch.”
Divers’ bathing suits are known to leave less to the imagination, but there is a reason behind the style.
"They have to be small because everything has to stay in place,” Tom Daley shared on The Graham Norton Show in 2016. “If you're spinning around, the last thing you want to do is have something come out of place. When you hit the water, you don't want things flapping about because it would hurt."
But Team USA Diving’s high-performance manager and education coordinator Leslie Hasselbach Adams shared that it’s also for looks.
"The latest trend that divers around the world are, I guess embracing, is the bottoms of their suits have gotten a lot smaller for the females," Leslie explained on Today July 28. "So it actually is a sport of aesthetics, and they judge the overall impression from your starting position all the way through ... when your toes go under the water, you're being judged from that point from an overall impression standpoint.”
